Help Item Permissions Explained

Applies to: VisualSP

Part of the power of VisualSP is the ability to display the appropriate Help item in the correct context. To accomplish this, VisualSP Administrators have three configuration settings at their disposal, and which can be combined, to give you the utmost control over who can see your Help item.

Scope

A new Help item will default to the scope in which it was created. In the example above, the Help item will be seen on any Wiki Page. You can expand who can see your Help item by adding a tick mark next to additional scopes.

URL Filter

If you need to limit a Help item at a more granular level, you can use a URL Filter:

A URL Filter will take precedence over whatever scope is selected. You can add as many URL Filters as needed. For more complex filtering, look into URLS that match the regex filter.

Browser Filter

You also have the option to only show a help item based upon what browser the user is using (available for help items created for any M365 application). This can come in handy, for example, if corporate governance restricts what browsers are used. You can use the browser filter to display a warning if the user is using a non-approved browser.

The Browser Filter is right next to the URL Filter:

The help item will appear in every browser you add to the Browser Filter.

You have the option of selecting one of the named browsers in the drop down:

or, for advanced users, us a user agent string that matches a regex.

You can add multiple browsers to the filter.

SharePoint Permissions Scope

If you are using VisualSP in SharePoint, you can select one of the out-of-the-box SharePoint permission groups by clicking the dropdown next to View Permissions.

Click the View Permissions button to select custom permissions on a more granular level.

If a permission scope is not selected, then the Help item will be available to everyone.

User Audiences

VisualSP's audience targeting feature allows content editors to create content and target specific users based on their identity or attributes.

Other browser-based applications

For applications other than SharePoint, you can only control where the help items are displayed through the use of the URL filter.
