Automatically Show Help Items when a User Visits a Page

Applies to: VisualSP
Any help item can be configured to automatically appear on any page one or more times when a user visits that type of page. For example, you can have a help item appear the first 5 times a user visits a certain page. You can configure this in the Help editor by going to Load Behavior in SETTINGS:

Here you will find the Auto Show on Load options:
The pattern selector dropdown defaults to Page Loads and the auto show pattern field accepts one or more alphanumerical values.

Common values for the Page Loads pattern are 1 (for the first visit), 50-100 (for visits 50 through 100), -100 (show for the first 100 visits, same as 1-100), 0 / blank (don't auto show at all), - (show on every visit).

When a value is entered in the auto show pattern field, the Start date field appears with today's date filled in by default. This field can be used if you would like to show the item only on/after a certain date (for example after a release of some functionality).

There is also an optional End date field, which is useful if the Help item is no longer relevant after a certain date. By filling in the end date, the Help item will no longer auto load after that date.

For Banners only, you have the additional option of the Continue auto-load even if user dismisses toggle.

The Load Behavior settings were expanded in May 2025 release to include additional pattern selector options e.g. Days, Weekdays, Weekends

Days - Configure this item to show automatically. Examples: 1 (for the first day), 50-100 (for days 50 through 100), -100 (show for the first 100 days, same as 1-100), 0 / blank (don't auto show at all), - (show every day).

Weekdays - Configure this item to show automatically. Examples: 1 (for the first weekday), 50-100 (for weekdays 50 through 100), -100 (show for the first 100 weekdays, same as 1-100), 0 / blank (don't auto show at all), - (show every weekday).

Weekends - Configure this item to show automatically. Examples: 1 (for the first weekend), 50-100 (for weekends 50 through 100), -100 (show for the first 100 weekends, same as 1-100), 0 / blank (don't auto show at all), - (show every weekend).

It is best practice to apply an auto show on load to a new help item. This way the load counter will start at zero for everyone. If you wish to test the auto show on load, we suggest you open a browser window in Incognito mode. This way there won't be any caching issues and it will represent a truer user experience.
